The Cloud Debate

Simon Crosby, CTO of Citrix’s Cloud and Datacenter group had a really interesting blog post this past weekend. We agree whole-heartedly with Simon’s thoughts on enterprise-ready cloud.

The good news for all of us is there’s room for more than one type of Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) provider. These specialized “clouds” are really making an impact and meeting customer’s demands. Case in point, government customers. I’ve yet to see any “public” cloud provider gain ATO for anything more than the most basic, non-sensitive workload. This is one key area we are investing in with our System Integrator partners.

And by the way - I do mean IaaS not PaaS. I’ll have more on our PaaS strategy in next week’s blog.

Along these same lines, I’ll be on stage at Synergy 2010 with Nathan Day , CTO of Softlayer. We plan to discuss and contrast these multiple views on cloud – Softlayer, who has done an amazing job at automation and enabling customers to self manage in the cloud, and Carpathia, who has focused more on managed services to allow enterprises/government customers to fully embrace cloud from on-boarding to operations. Our “debate” is scheduled for Friday, May 14 @ 1:00PM EDT (10:00AM PDT).

Phoenix / I agree with you 1000%. has it been 100% perfect. No! Has the sppuort and response been better than any shared or dedicated I have been with HELL YES!!! They have even undone damage thought to be impossible by the software creators (fixed and restored FOR FREE severely damaged CPVLABS DB [no, we STILL don't know what happened?!]) I have had their techs huddled down with me at 12:01 NYE working on a server issue when I moved from a TERRIBLE hosting service that cost me thousands to their dedicated that except for the credit card charge. I hardly notice its there. Because, it just keeps on going and going and going (like a server should). I hope the only continue to strive and deliver EPIC customer sppuort. Great Post AGAIN Morgan

Thanks for the shout out in your article.I would srtlngoy suggest you rethink the entire process of the book. I ONLY buy books because of the content they provide. What I mean by that is I don't want to buy a book that is an MSDN re-write or intro book.Look at most ASP.NET or Silverlight books. They go something like:Chapter 1 What is Silverlight?Chapter 2 Silverlight architectureChapter 3 XAMLChapter 4 Data binding By chapter 11 I have learned NOTHING new.This is why I wrote my book the way I did I tried to skip all the fluff and go straight for the meat. This will make your book more succesful because you will attract a higher class audience and not just average developers. It is really hard to provide great content people will pay for my book is up on 10 illegal book sites (that I have counted) and there is little I can do. Average developers or people that will only want a high level interest in your book will NOT pay for the book.In summary treat your book NOT likea high school report (where you go to the library and regurgitate knowledge from other people), but treat it like a PhD or Master's Thesis where its 75% or more ORIGINAL ideas and ORIGINAL content.
