Update from Burton “Catalyst 10"

A quick update from San Diego airport on route back home to Denver. I spent the day at the Burton Group Catalyst #10 conference. I have to say, Burton did an excellent job of pulling this event together. As a result of the very rigorous “approval” process, the end resulted in extremely high quality presentations.

My two top picks for the day were Rob Lowden from Indiana University, who presented a very interesting view on how the college virtualized tier1 (Oracle 10) databases. They are down to having just 2 databases running on bare metal.

My other pick was Mike Neil from Microsoft, who covered Microsoft's view on the cloud and what “we are all in” really means. He also gave an interesting perspective on the cloud metrics Microsoft uses. One of the key metrics is performance/watt per dollar. He also briefly touched on low(er) power compute and novel datacenter strategies using containers. Both had great content and very engaging speakers.

Simon Crosby (CTO, Datacenter and Cloud Division @ Citrix) and I presented “Why are you still buying servers?”using the pizza analogy, which was a lot of fun. We had a very good Q&A session at the end that included some discussion on federal IT, using STIG, and how the network needs to evolve to keep pace with the cloud. The closing comment was “how many of you still want to buy servers?” Other than Mike Neil from Microsoft, no hands came up.

However, everyone was very hungry for pizza when we finished!!
